Breast Reconstruction. The breast is a symbol of femininity, sexuality and maternity. Mastectomy is about a deforming procedure of high emotional cost for a woman.

The treatment of breast cancer is carried out with the cooperation of the Plastic Surgeon, the Mastologist and the Oncologist. Surgical procedures are personalized for each patient and can be combined with complementary therapeutic interventions such as radiation.

The choice of time (direct or late) and the most appropriate method of breast reconstruction are determined by:

• the staging of the tumor
• the plan of complementary therapy and mainly radiation
• the patient’s decision

The goal is to reform and create a new breast that approaches the normal and to achieve symmetry with the contralateral breast, participating in the harmony of the rest of the body.

Reconstruction methods include:

• the use of tissue expanders and silicone implants
• the use of autologous tissues
• a combination thereof

Breast reconstruction is performed under general anesthesia, in more than one procedure, and it is usually necessary to interfere with the contralateral breast to achieve better symmetry. Reconstruction of the nipple-areola complex completes breast reconstruction and is done under local anesthesia. The nipple is reconstructed with local flaps, while the areola with a skin graft from the groin area or or with medical tattoos.
